Rome, capital of future cities

In 2020, the city of Rome launched a strategic plan for a smart city. It contains guidelines for improving the quality of life and of City services with a multi-disciplinary approach based on the use of technology and digitalization.

Roma Smart City’s lines of action

The strategic plan to make the city of Rome increasingly smart aims at guaranteeing more safety and information for the public and keep a constant focus on environmental sustainability. Further, to make the streets safer by making mobility sustainable, it is necessary to monitor urban traffic but without losing sight of the local context, the capital’s heritage that needs upgrading.

The requirement

Valorization of open data from urban monitoring. Reduction of pollution caused by the city’s traffic. Optimization of public transport planning and reduction of accidents around pedestrian crossings.

Open data
Valorize open data from urban monitoring.
Reduction of pollution
Reduce pollution produced by city traffic.
Public transport
Optimize public transport planning.
Safety
Reduce accidents around pedestrian crossings.

The solution

In accordance with the guidelines of the Rome Smart City Plan, Edison NEXT in collaboration with Sony and Envision produced a series of experimental smart mobility services. The technology underpinning these solutions is the Smart TIP developed by Envision using Sony technology. Installed on existing street furniture (bus shelters, traffic light posts, etc.), these devices can acquire and process information on the position of empty parking spaces, people on pedestrian crossings, and numbers of people getting on and off buses/trams and waiting at stops.

Results

The project’s many results include an appreciable reduction in traffic and optimization of transport. Innovative new services have been introduced and pedestrian safety has been improved.
