Why Edison NEXT biomethane?

Biomethane is an high quality, high efficiency gas, indistinguishable from natural gas and suitable for gradually replacing natural gas to decarbonise heavy transport, industry and power generation. Edison NEXT develops, builds and operates biomethane production plants (gas and liquid) fed by organic matter from solid urban waste and agricultural and food industry waste. The process

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that transforms biodegradable organic substances into biogas and digestate, taking place in the absence of oxygen.

Biogas

The anaerobic digestion process takes place in digesters in which biogas is produced by anaerobic biochemical reactions.

Separation of methane from carbon dioxide

The biogas thus obtained undergoes a purification process in which methane and carbon dioxide are separated, the latter being captured and liquefied in order to use it in other industrial processes.

Transport or mains supply

Biomethane is a energy vector from renewable sources with the same characteristics as natural gas and is suitable for vehicle fuel and feeding to gas grids.

Digestate

The part that cannot be degraded any further, the digestate, is stable and devoid of bad odours. It is put through a composting phase to produce quality compost.
